New York, NY – Kingstown Cafe proudly presents "Let Me Tell You Something…", an evocative solo photography exhibition of the works of Phoenix Robles, curated by Jomani Danielle. Opening on Saturday, May 18th from 4 PM to 8 PM a dynamic collection of narrative film photography that explores the black experience through the lens of our celebrated visual storyteller.
Phoenix Robles, born in Chicago and currently based in New York, merges her background in human services with her sharp acumen in visual storytelling to challenge and redefine narratives around systemic racism and identity. Her journey in photography began with her studies in Journalism at Columbia College Chicago, and deepened during her time in Puerto Rico as a photo apprentice, where she embraced narrative and street photography. Notably, her project "Black Girl with the Blues" explores grief and resilience within the cultural contexts of the Black Diaspora. Robles' work, including her vivid street photography series and self-published zine, has been widely exhibited and used in educational settings to foster dialogue on activism and visual storytelling.
"Let Me Tell You Something…" represents a culmination of Robles' work, capturing everything from the dynamism of cultural movements to intimate moments of everyday life. Curator Jomani Danielle remarks, “Phoenix’s camera acts not just as a tool, but as a pen that rewrites narratives long distorted. This exhibition is a powerful testament to her ability to capture the soul of community life, revealing the strength and heartbeats behind each frame.”
The opening night will feature a reception with Phoenix Robles, offering attendees the chance to engage with her and delve into the stories behind her compelling photographs.
